Week 8 – Back to where it all started


No, I haven’t gained all of the weight back.  I just finally managed to make it back to my weight as on one year ago.    In the intervening 12 months… well, out of a sense of tradition, you can read after the jump if you want the details.

This time, a year ago, I was at 317 pounds and dropping.  In April of 2008, I had weighed in at 348 pounds and my doctor had diagnosed me with Type 2 Diabetes.   By August, I had shed 30 pounds, and my doctor had decided to take me off of medication (Metformin) and call my diabetes “diet controlled”. (Which means I’ll always have an issue with blood sugar, that’s more or less genetic, but if I eat right, I will have no problems.)

Of course, as soon as I had my daughter, out went the exercise and regular eating habits, and in came the “grab some food while you can” diet plan.  My weight shot back up to 334 as of 2 months ago, and my doctor said “hey, remember what I said about ‘diet controlled’?  Have some medication to remind you.” (back on Metformin)

Kathy’s bout with gestational diabetes and the diet plan she used to lose 30 pounds while pregnant, was the inspiration behind my latest attempt to get my body back into some other shape besides round.  The lack of exercise has slowed my progress a bit, but I am still managing 2 pounds per week. (I’d like to be doing at least 3, but until my knee is 100%, kettlebell training is a dodgy proposition.)

This week, I’m taking my wife and daughter down to Florida to see my family and some friends.  Since I can’t weigh in tomorrow, I figure I’d go a day early this week.  No exercise this week, but next week, I anticipate starting over with kettlebell training.

Details:

  • Knee is ready,  workouts begin again next week.
  • Diet back in some semblance of order.
  • Must remember to eat snacks between meals, do NOT skip.

Results:

  • Current Weight:  317
  • Start Weight: 334
  • Goal Weight by 9/1/2009 (4 weeks): 300
  • Weight Loss to Date: 17 pounds (2+ pounds per week)
  • Weight loss by 9/1/2009 at current pace (12 week total): 25 pounds

Plan for this week:

  • Vacation, but start working out again when I return.
  • Get back into a routine.
  • Keep on keepin’ on.
