Welcome to my world, where serendipty rears its head on a daily basis.
In the beginning, there was a television commercial. The commercial was for some sports-related product (I couldn’t remember which one, thought it was Gatorade, turned out to be Nike. FAIL at effective advertising.) which had this really bumpin’ song. Didn’t know the title or artist, but I heard just enough of it to do a search on the ‘net using the lyrics.
As it turns out, the song is called “List of Demands” by an artist named Saul Williams. In additon to having a very elegantly designed website, it seems that Mr. Williams has some philosophical values that resonate with my own to an extent. He distributes his own music on the Internet, using a business model that encourages listeners to try his music, and support him financially by paying for a higher quality version of his music online. He’s not adverse to making a buck through his music (after all, I’m guessing that Nike paid a buck or two in order to use his music in that commercial), but it’s about the art, not the dollar.
So far, so good, right?
Well another issue that is near and dear to my heart is Scientology. If you want to read a hack science fiction writer who was drug-addled enough to invent his own religion and charge the marks his followers for it, fine by me. However, if I were the supreme deity of the universe for just one day, I would only have one commandment.
Thou shalt not subvert the will of another.
Let me be clear. This does not mean that I support anarchy. I believe that government is a necessary evil, but I also believe that people have the right to choose who governs them. I believe that there are consequences for your choices in life and while you cannot choose consequences, you have the absolute right to make a choice for yourself.
Apparently, the Church of Scientology is incompatible with my belief system.
When you get into the business of deciding how someone else lives their life, especially when your reasoning involved religion or “for their own good”, I believe that you have crossed the line from good to evil. Apparently, I am not alone. While I will neither confirm, nor deny, any involvement with the “organization” known as Anonymous, I am certainly sympathetic to its cause.
“Grim?”, you ask…
“What does Saul Williams have to do with the anti-Scientology movement?”
I’m glad you asked. In the course of my wanderings on YouTube take a look at what I found.
I think that’s what they mean by “Synergy”…
“Knowledge is free.
We are Anonymous.
We are Legion.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.
Expect us.”

“…if I were the supreme deity of the universe for just one day, I would only have one commandment.
Thou shalt not subvert the will of another.”
Obviously, you will never be in a position of power. That is the mechanism
used throughout history by leaders to remain leaders. Actually I am unaware of any other method that was successful.
